HOW TO TAKE
CARE OF AFRICAN NATURAL HAIR
Stagnant hair and breaking of hair is worry-some after all the
hard work of plaiting and buying expensive hair products in order for hair to
grow. Here are a few tips on how to maintain your African natural hair;
Wash your
hair at least once a week in order to keep your hair and scalp clean. Use
shampoos that is not harmful to your hair to avoid hair loss. Deep condition
for 30 minutes at least once a month for more moisture. Do hot oil treatments
at least once a month using oils such as Jojoba oil and coconut oil among others.
Avoid over
manipulating your hair through combing or brushing your hair unnecessarily
especially when it is wet because it will only strain your strands. Wear
protective styles most of the time to protect your ends from weather elements
such as winter to reduce the chances of your hair splitting. Keep your ends
well moisturized and hidden away if possible. Remember water is the only
moisturizer but you need to also seal in the moisture by adding oil to your
ends.
Avoid tight
braids, pony tails or just pulling your hair too tight if you do not want to
deal with a receding hair line. Avoid plaiting your hair with wool because it
is too drying for our hair. It will suck the little moisture that our hair has.
Rather, try twisting, braiding your hair on its own. Massage your scalp for
about ten minutes daily to increase the blood flow to your scalp there by
stimulating hair growth. It will also help you to relax. Use a satin scarf or a
satin pillow case to protect your hair when you go to bed.
Avoid using
hair coloring products and dyes since they have strong chemicals that damage the hair
follicles so using color is very damaging to our hair Adopt a healthy
lifestyle. Drink enough water, eat healthy, exercise, reduce your stress
levels, relax and watch your hair grow. Patience is needed since your hair will
only grow on average of 12mm a month some people more and others less depending
on genes.
